Effective Applications of Power Electronic in Power Systems Course
Course Overview:
This course focuses on the more recent developments in power semiconductor switches design, their selections, and application specific ratings.
Participants will learn the merits of power electronic converters as compared to the conventional system, in addition to the techniques employed to overcome disadvantages such as degradation of power factor and harmonic distortion.
Among other key areas, rectification, chopping, and inversion of inputs for AC and DC power conditioning as well as designing controllers and implementing their designs are touched upon. UPS systems and VVVF speed control of motors are some of the end application examples discussed.
This course is meant for Engineers and Technicians and aims to ensure that participants gain skills on how to implement changes optimally into power conditioning systems.
Course Objectives:
This course is designed to introduce the subject of Power Electronics with a concentration on the:
- Latest advances developments and availability of power semiconductor switches. Proper selection of the type and ratings of the power switch to match the requirements of a certain application will also be investigated.
- Basic merits of Power Electronics converters over the conventional counterparts. Drawbacks of Power Electronics, which are, mainly, the reduction of the input power factor and the generation of considerable load and line harmonics, will also be highlighted.
- Rectification, Chopping, and Inversion processes required for DC and AC power conditioning. This will include power circuits, control topologies, conduction patterns, analysis, and evaluation of the performance parameters of the corresponding controllers.
- Basic guidelines for the design and practical implementation of the different types of controllers. Real design circuitry will be investigated as case studies.
- Evaluation of the harmonic spectra of the load-line waveforms. Reduction or elimination of these harmonics will be investigated.
- Widely used applications of Power Electronics, such as UPS systems and speed control of IM using VVVF control will be introduced.
Who Should Attend?
This course is strongly recommended for Electrical, Electromechanical, and Industrial Engineers and Technicians, who involved in any AC or DC power conditioning system including, but not limited to, power utilities, VVVF speed control of electric motors, and UPS system.
